The Temperance Toolbox
Practical Tools for a Purposeful Life
Temperance is self-control. Rule over your own temper, appetites, and impulses, so that what you do next is something you chose rather than something that happened to you. Scripture treats it as a mark of a life under God's authority. It is also a skill, which means it can be practiced, and it gets stronger with use.
That is what these tools are for. Not reading about self-control, practicing it, in the ordinary moments where it gets decided.
"And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown."
1 Corinthians 9:25Why this matters
A person who cannot govern his own reactions is exposed. Every pressure that comes gets straight through, because there is nothing standing between what happens and what he does about it.
"Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls."
Proverbs 25:28Walls are built one course at a time. That is the work these tools are for.
Where self-control comes from
Scripture puts self-control in two places at once, and both are true. Paul lists it last in a single fruit that the Spirit produces, set against the works of the flesh he has just named. These qualities grow where the Spirit is at work. They are not nine separate achievements to be checked off.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23And it is something we are told to add, deliberately and with effort, building one quality on another.
"But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love."
2 Peter 1:5-7Where are you right now?
Pick the one that fits. Each goes straight to the tools that suit that state.
Steady
Settled enough to think clearly. A good time to build: work through a study, set the week in order, put something in place before you need it.

-
Take a Pause
Put space between what happened and what you do about it. Slow the body down first, because a settled body makes a clear decision possible.
"So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."
James 1:19 -
Examine the Emotion
Name what is going on: the feeling, where you notice it in your body, the thought underneath it, and what set it off.
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties."
Psalm 139:23 -
Make a Plan
Decide the next reasonable action. One step, small enough that you will do it, and clear enough that you know when it is done.
"A man's heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps."
Proverbs 16:9 -
Practice the Skills
Do the thing. Then look back at what worked and what you would handle differently next time.
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."
James 1:22
